The American Legion Council and the Washington County Airport Board has approved the sign and monument to be placed at the airport. The Rotary Clubs Centennial project of erecting a replica of the Washington Monument will be placed at the airport where the plane was. There will be plaques dedicating the monument to the Veterans of Washington County. The Rotary will pay for all construction related to the building of the monument, as well as, repairs to the stone base. < /p>
The sign at the Airport will be a brick mural from Endicott. It will be 8 feet by 16. The sign and Veterans Directory will be paid for by donations and fundraising through the sale of bricks for $100, as was done for the sign at Munchkin Land. The $100 will cover the cost of what you would like inscribe on the brick with the rest going to pay for the building and maintenance of the memorial. < /p>
One of the goals behind the current design was to make it lasting and low maintenance. Bricks may be purchased at the Clerks Office. A special fund for the donations and brick purchases has been set up for building and maintenance of the memorial. The directory will be like the ones at Washington City and Hanover Cemeteries. The rollers will be turned manually. Any Veteran who has lived in Washington County and served honorably is eligible to go into the directory. We would like all Washington County Veterans in the directory. There is no cost to place a Veterans name in the Directory, but a copy of their DD-214 will be needed. If the Veteran is currently serving a copy of their ID card, until they leave the service and obtain a DD-214. Because of sensitive information on DD214s, they will be protected and privacy. < /p>
A special roller in the Directory will be dedicated to those from the county who were killed in action. Point of contact for any questions or comments are the American Legion Council members or Alison Mueller at 785-747-2646.
